What to expect when getting your suit altered

Professional suit alterations

Having your suit tailored can make a large difference to how it looks on you. Everybody is unique, so when you buy a suit from a store without having it tailored a lot of the time there are aspects of the suit that don't quite fit you just right. This is where suit alterations come in! Your seamstress will be able to work with you to make your suit fit you perfectly.

We’ve put together this blog to let you know exactly what to expect from the process of getting your suit altered. There’s a lot that goes into creating the perfect fitted suit, and the best part is that you have a lot of input in the final look!

Consultation

The process of all alterations begins with a consultation. This is the time when you get to speak to the seamstress about what it is you’re looking for and they’ll be able to advise you on exactly what is and isn’t possible. For your consultation you should bring with you the suit you want altered so that the seamstress can see exactly what they’re working with and get started as soon as they can if you decide to go ahead with the alterations. Once everything has been agreed, your tailor will book you in for your fitting appointment.

First fitting

Your first fitting is where the work begins. Your seamstress will take a series of measurements from you to get a clear understanding of your body shape and how the suit should fit you. Once you have your suit on your seamstress will talk you through your options and begin pinning the suit into place. This gives you an idea of what the suit will look like when finished, while also allowing the seamstress to know what they need to do once you take your suit off.

Top tip: if you’re having the suit made for a certain occasion, bring the shoes you’ll be planning on wearing with you. This means the suit will fall at the exact right position on your shoes and not hang too long or short.

Second fitting

Your second fitting is the first opportunity where you get to see your suit with some alterations done. It’s also a time where your seamstress gets a chance to have a look at how the suit is fitting you now and see if there’s any further alterations they want to make. This is your time to point out anything you’re unhappy with, or if there’s a certain aspect you just want to be tweaked a little bit more. How many fittings you have depends on the extent of the alterations and can change during the process, so you might have a few fittings like this.

Final fitting

Your final fitting is quite self explanatory, it’s the final time you try on your suit with your seamstress. This is where all the hard work is complete and you get to take the suit home with you, after trying it on to make sure you’re fully happy with the work done.
