How to layer your clothing

Cold weather means one thing, it’s time to layer up. Wearing layers doesn’t have to be all about keeping you warm, it can be a fashion statement too. Long gone are the days where we just put on as many layers as we could to stay warm, now you can do it while sticking to the current fashion trends! Keep reading for tips on how you can incorporate layering into your fashionable wardrobe.

Tips for incorporating the layering trend

Use your summer dresses

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean you need to pack away your dresses. Every year we are seeing more and more people wearing their summer dresses in autumn and winter with one little twist, layering. Wearing a long sleeve top or turtleneck underneath your dress creates a fashion-forward outfit while also utilising items you already have. You can also put a jumper over your dress for extra layers and warmth, giving you a killer outfit while still feeling comfortable in the cooler weather.

Opt for a sweater vest

Sweater vests continue to be a staple in people's wardrobes this autumn and winter. They’re a great option for layers as that’s basically what they’re made to do! It’s really simple to style, much like the summer dress you just wear a longer sleeved item underneath to give you the layers effect while also giving you some extra padding to keep you warm.

Top tip: if you have an old jumper, visit your seamstress to discuss turning it into a sweater vest. This way you’re staying on trend without having to invest in new items of clothing.

Turtle necks and jumpers

The turtle neck and jumper combination is one that will never go out of style. While the layering impact is less visible on this, that peak of turtle neck really adds something to the outfit. This is especially noticeable when you wear a turtleneck that differs in colour from your jumper, such as a yellow turtle neck with a black jumper. You can have fun with these colour and pattern combinations and give a few different ones a try.

Add a blazer

All of the above combinations still work great when you add a blazer, giving you an extra layer as well as more clothes to play around with the colours and patterns you are wearing. Blazers are a classic, so they go with almost anything, and having this as a third layer will help to keep you warm. Go up a size when purchasing your blazer so you can make sure that the layers you want to wear will fit well underneath, you don’t want to be walking around feeling like your blazer is about to burst.

Layering is a classic autumn and winter staple, and this year is no different. Play around with these different types of layers and you’ll be amazed at all the different styles you can come up with, and how good they look on.
